How to plan an Aluminium Entrance for a Narrow Hallway

In a narrow hallway, a successful new entrance starts with space planning.

Decide how much room people need to pass through, where the open door will sit and where daylight can enter without exposing the hall to the street. 

Aluminium offers useful design possibilities, but the frame, glazing and threshold must work with the existing opening. 

A handsome door can still be inconvenient if it leaves nowhere to stand with shopping.

Measure the passage people will actually use

Begin with the current entrance in use. Open the door fully and note where it meets a radiator, stair, cupboard or coat rack. Sketch the swing and mark where someone could stand while another person comes through. Include anything routinely carried indoors, such as a folded pushchair. This gives the surveyor a practical brief alongside the dimensions.

Ask for the proposed clear opening width: the usable passage when the door is open. It differs from the overall frame width and the leaf’s stated width. A wider frame or a new fixed sidelight can change the space available, so do not judge access from the outside measurement alone. Confirm the hinge side and opening direction on the drawing, viewed from an agreed side.

Choose a route for daylight

A sidelight is a fixed glazed panel beside a door; a fanlight sits above it. Either may introduce light, but they use different parts of the opening. Where width is precious, ask whether glazing within the leaf or a fanlight could preserve more passage space than a sidelight. Feasibility depends on the door system and the building, so keep these as options for the survey.

When comparing aluminium entrance doors, request drawings showing the complete frame and any glazed panels, alongside the clear opening dimensions. Take a photograph from the darkest part of the hall as well as the pavement. Together, they help explain where light is needed and which proportions should be retained. Avoid deciding on a decorative panel before understanding that layout.

Assess privacy from both sides of the glass

Clear glass may suit an entrance set well back from the road. A hall directly beside the pavement calls for a closer look at obscuration. Pilkington’s guidance on textured glass describes designs that retain light while offering different levels of privacy. The appearance of a pattern alone does not tell you how much detail it conceals.

Ask to see samples with objects behind them, at realistic viewing distances and with light coming from each side. Explain whether you want to conceal coats, movement or a view towards another room. Separately, ask the supplier to confirm the required safety glazing and any security performance for the complete specification. Obscuration describes visibility; it does not establish either of those properties.

Resolve the threshold before the flooring

The threshold joins the door to the route into the house. Discuss it before choosing the finished hall floor or laying the porch paving. Ask the surveyor to show the internal and external levels, the threshold profile and the drainage arrangement together. A low-looking threshold in a photograph tells you little about the step or slope that someone will encounter on site.

If someone uses a walking aid or wheelchair, make that part of the initial brief and assess the approach as well as the doorway. Approved Document M provides accessibility guidance for buildings in England, with different categories for dwellings. Ask the installer or building control body which requirements apply to the work; requirements differ across the UK. Avoid treating a catalogue’s threshold description as proof of an accessible entrance.

Check warmth for the chosen configuration

A brighter entrance also needs a considered thermal specification. The Energy Saving Trust explains that aluminium doors may incorporate thermal breaks: insulating material that reduces heat transfer through the construction. Performance also depends on the insulated leaf, glazing and seals. Aluminium by itself does not tell you how warm the finished entrance will feel.

Request the U-value, a measure of heat transfer, for the proposed doorset and ask whether it includes the selected glazing and side panels. A lower U-value indicates less heat transfer under the stated conditions. Establish whether a quoted figure describes your configuration or a reference size. Ask how the junction around the frame will be insulated and sealed, too.

Review the entrance as one small building project

Before ordering, put the elevation and hallway sketch side by side. Confirm the usable opening, swing, glass and floor levels in writing. For a listed house or one in a conservation area, check proposed alterations with the local planning authority before committing to any home improvement. Include switches, the doormat and any doorbell wiring in the conversation. Resolving these ordinary details early helps the new entrance work comfortably every day.
