Many people, even of the younger generation, wonder how to stop hair loss or prevent hair loss because, by the young age of 36, almost two-thirds of men will display visible baldness.

Hair loss in women is still a bit of a taboo, but more women come forward with it and look for solutions too.

It’s therefore easy to see why so many people are looking for a hair loss that really works.

Oftentimes, when people are thinking about getting a hair transplant surgery, they get stumped when they come across a different technique or procedure options with varying hair transplant costs.

It’s easy to get confused and feel overwhelmed. You do not want to end up deciding on the wrong surgery technique. Before you get alarmed, there’s something that you need to know.

Every good clinic will provide you with a consultation first of all, which should be free of charge. The clinic should make you aware of the different options, such as DHI hair transplant, FUE hair transplant, and FUT hair transplant.

Of course, it would be unfair of the clinic to leave it on you to decide which hair surgery option you should choose. You’re no expert so you probably don’t know what will work best for you depending on your situation. To you, it is hair loss, and you need it to stop.

Differences between Hair Transplant Options

FUT vs FUE

There are many hair transplant techniques performed today. Fortunately, things keep getting better with time as newer and improved technologies for hair transplant procedures are made available. They are ensuring greater ease and comfort for the patient while increasing the success rate after the surgery. Regardless, most of the surgical innovations are taking place in the three main categories of hair transplant surgeries.

Each has a different operational technique and style. Moreover, they are suitable for different types of hair and hair loss patterns. We’ll explain FUE hair transplant, DHI hair transplant, and FUT hair transplant to you. It might give you an idea of what you might end up getting. Still, you will need a professional’s consultation since different tools might be used and the transplant cost may vary depending on the type.

What is the FUE Hair Transplant Technique?

As the name indicates, Follicular Unit Extraction involves the extraction of units of hair follicles from the donor area.

It uses microneedles for this purpose so that the surrounding hair isn’t damaged. The small units of hair follicles taken from the donor area also ensure minimal scarring. Once the hair follicles are harvested very small incisions are made in the recipient area, so that the follicles are inserted. This technique allows for greater precision and control. If the surgeon is skilled, he/she will make sure that the transplanted hair grows at the same angle as the surrounding hair.

This technique is most suitable if your balding area is large, and you require more than 2500 grafts. Also, if you are losing hair in the crown region, this method must be performed by your surgeon. This might give you somewhat of an idea of whether you will be a good candidate for FUE hair transplant surgery.

What is the Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) Technique?

Hair Transplant TreatmentsIn DHI hair transplant, a Choi Implanter pen is used for removal and insertion of hair follicles. Instead of creating channels in the bald area manually, as happens in traditional hair transplant, the Choi Implanter pen creates and inserts the hair follicles in the recipient area simultaneously. Through this method, patients can achieve greater density. Moreover, as the size of the incisions is smaller, the recovery period is faster. And better yet, it gives more natural-looking results.

The logic used in this technique is the same as that of FUE hair transplant. Hair follicles are taken individually from the donor area. If your bald area is not large and you are experiencing a decreasing hair density, this option might suit you well. With this hair transplant technique, there’s no need to shave the whole head. Only the donor area will be shaved. This is why this option is preferred by females. However, males can also undergo it.

Since transplanting the hairs takes time with this option, if you require more than 2500 grafts, this hair transplant option is not advisable. If your bald area is large, 2500 grafts will not make a difference, and you might require 2 or 3 more sessions to have full coverage.

What is FUT Hair Transplant Technique?

This is the technique that was used for hair restoration surgery before FUE dominated the scene. In this, the hair is taken from the backside of the head. Only here, they are not taken individually but rather as a strip of skin. This skin is then cut into small pieces which contain one graft each. This is then transplanted into the bald region of the head.

Its downside is that it doesn’t allow too many grafts to be transplanted. Also, since a strip of the skin is taken, there’s a horizontal scar left after the surgery, and it affects the look of the donor area.

Wrapping Up

Hopefully, this guide has made you more aware of the main differences between the most prominent hair transplant surgery techniques. You can make a guess about what you’ll be recommended based on your situation. However, it’s always best to go with the surgeon’s suggestion as they know the best.
