Raye is a singer-songwriter from Croydon, London who rose to fame with her EPs Second and Euphoric Sad Songs. She has collaborated with artists like Calvin Harris, Ellie Goulding, Jax Jones and David Guetta.

Raye signed a four-album deal with Polydor Records in 2014, but the label did not allow her to release her debut album for seven years. In 2021, she posted a tearful video on social media, saying that she had done everything the label had asked her to do, but they still did not think she was good enough to release an album. She said she had dozens of potential hits that were either collecting dust or given away to other artists. She asked the label to either listen to her or let her go.

A month later, Polydor released Raye from her contract, and she became an independent artist. She then released Escapism, a song that Polydor had rejected, which became a viral hit on TikTok and reached number one on the UK singles chart. She also released her debut album, My 21st Century Blues, which received critical acclaim and was nominated for the Mercury Prize.
